It was first published in the Folio of 1623, possibly from a prompt book, and is Shakespeare's shortest tragedy. Macbeth: Study Guide SparkNotes Shakespeare’s play about a Scottish nobleman and his wife who murder their king for his throne charts the extremes of ambition and guilt. First staged in 1606, Macbeth ’s three witches and other dark imagery have entered our collective imagination. Nicol Williamson plays the title role and Jane Lapotaire portrays Lady Macbeth in Jack Gold's production of the Scottish play. After receiving a prophecy of his future kingship from three witches, and coerced by his scheming wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan, but he is increasingly oppressed by the guilt of his crime in this darkest of Shakespearian tragedies.
